Message from the Attorney General on Child Support
"The problem of child support nonpayment is pervasive. When I took office, there were over 650,000 children in our state left to fend for themselves, not getting the court-ordered child support they needed. That's an over $8 billion debt. In our society, we have parents who have the means to pay, but simply do not. We can not stand idly by as these children go hungry."
--Attorney General Mike Cox
Michigan Sheriffs' Association
December 6, 2004
-
Following up on a promise to Michigan citizens, Cox created the
first-of-its-kind Child Support unit.
-
Since
2003, the award-winning unit has recovered more than $76 million and arrested
more than 4,600 defendants.
-
Cox's
efforts have directly assisted 6,697 children.
-
For
every $1 in General Funds appropriated to the Child Support Division, more than
$5 has been collected in child support.
| Overview of the Child Support Division When the Child Support Division was created in April 2003, it was the first of its kind in the nation. |
