In October 1997, through an independent job search, Pamela found employment as a salesclerk at Hudson’s. Although she enjoyed the work, she was not interested in a full-time sales career. Her lifelong dream was to become a nurse.

Pamela was enrolled in the nursing program at Wayne State University. She faced many challenges, but was determined to succeed. For several years she juggled work, classes, studying and child care to pursue her registered nursing certification. Academic scholarships and school covered most of her expenses and at one point she even worked two jobs. When the work requirements for FIP recipients were increased, Pamela was not sure how she would fulfill the new work provisions and complete her nursing clinicals. She discussed her situation with her Family Independence Specialist and her case was deferred.
