June's Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Beatrice Taylor. This mother of two first sought assistance from the Maddelein District Wayne County Family Independence Agency (FIA) in 1974. She received Aid for Dependent Children, Medicaid and Food Stamps. In the 1970s Beatrice launched a singing career and in the 1980s she attended accounting classes to prepare for a degree; however, both ventures were unsuccessful and she continued to remain on assistance to provide for her family.
In March 1998, Beatrice was referred to Work First. At Execu-Tech, Inc. she received job counseling and participated in other employment related activities. Although she made efforts to improve her work skills, her progress was being undermined by her substance abuse problem. Beatrice's Family Independence Specialist and her Work First counselor advised her to seek treatment. In April 1998, Beatrice began outpatient treatment services at Northeast Health Services, Inc. She was receptive to working with the program and determined to improve her life.
Through Work First she learned of a job opening for a cashier. She applied for the position and on September 3, 1998, began working at Mr. C's Deli in Grosse Pointe. In less than a year she received a promotion to Night Manager. Beatrice Taylor's Family Independence case closed in 1998 because of excess earnings. Currently, she receives Transitional Medicaid and Food Stamp cash out benefits. Today, Beatrice is a positive role model for her children. She illustrates that with hard work and determination you can succeed.
