| Rebecca Shore |
April's Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Rebecca Shore. She turned to the Ogemaw County Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in October 1985. At that time she was 18 years old, pregnant and badly in need of financial assistance. Through the Ogemaw FIA she received Aid for Dependent Children (ADC) and Medicaid. In 1988, Rebecca married and her ADC case was closed. Several years later, divorced and pregnant with her third child, she once again turned to the FIA for help in providing for her family.
After speaking with her Family Independence Specialist, Rebecca decided she could earn enough to support her family by becoming a registered nurse. For several years this single mother of four juggled work, classes, studying and family to reach her goal. Pell Grants covered her school expenses and relatives helped with child care. Rebecca also received day care payments from the FIA to support her extended family's efforts. Her employer, Munson Home Health Care, scheduled her work hours around her class schedule and often gave her assignments that allowed her study time. In December 1997, Rebecca graduated with an associate's degree in nursing. She will be taking the nursing board exam later this year to complete her certification. She is a wonderful role model and through her example, her children will learn that determination and hard work can lead to success. Rebecca's public assistance case closed in February 1994 because of excess income.
