Phyllis Baldwin

Photo of DHS Achiever of the Month for October 1998 Phyllis Baldwin The October 1998 Achiever of Month Award was presented to Phyllis Baldwin of Mesick. Phyllis is married and the mother of three children. She and her husband Thomas applied for assistance in September of 1987, when work stopped coming into the family business. While receiving assistance Thomas suffered a debilitating heart attack. Phyllis who had never had full-time employment was now the primary wage earner. She struggled over the years to secure a college degree that would enable her to find a good job. Despite not having a drivers license or a car she managed to attend Baker College and earned an Associate of Business Degree in Accounting. Pell grants and student loans helped pay her tuition and the Job Training Partnership Act covered the expense of books and other equipment. In March 1997, Phyllis was referred to the Work First program. Soon, as a result of a self-initiated job search she found employment with Economy Homes. Her efforts to move forward to achieve financial self-sufficiency have paid off. Phyllis' FIP case closed in May of 1997. She has turned her family's life around and become a wonderful role model for her children.
