| Walter Nobles |
The June 1998 Achiever of the Month award was presented to Walter Nobles. Walter first began receiving public assistance in 1982 when he applied for General Assistance. He relied on several forms of financial and medical assistance for a number of years to make ends meet. Unaware of a drug problem himself, a Juvenile Court Judge encouraged Walter to go into treatment in order to get his children who were in foster care back. While undergoing treatment his children became his inspiration. He went through parenting classes and learned how to be a role model for his children. In 1997 when Walter’s FIP case was opened he was referred to the Work First Program through their contractor, Development Centers. With the help of the Michigan Rehabilitation Institute and Work First he learned of a job at A-OK Modernization, a home improvement company. He received money for clothing from Development Centers when he first began working. Walter has also benefited from on-the-job training in all areas of home improvement. He has been working for A-OK Modernization for the past 16 months. Walter hopes to someday own his own business. He and his wife Sheila, a Certified Nurses Assistant, and their six children live in the home that they have proudly purchased. The family’s FIP case closed in March of 1997.
