| Shelly Breithaupt |
Shelly Breithaupt is the single mother of two girls and the April 1998 Achiever of the Month. In October, 1997 she applied for public assistance after experiencing family difficulties. Shelly had not worked in the last six years but was familiar with FIA programs because she had volunteered for the Victim’s Rights Program at the local Prosecutor’s office. After applying for the Family Independence Program (FIP), the FIA referred Shelly to Work First. She left Work First with information regarding seasonal employment at a local business. Shelly secured the position but, after the holidays, the job ended. The FIA provided State Emergency Relief Services to avoid a possible eviction or utility shut off. Also, Shelly was given a new referral to Work First. She already had an interview scheduled with a local dentist’s office that she obtained through constant review of the local newspaper want-ads. In January she began her employment with the local dentist. Shelly works an average of 40 hours a week and recently has been getting hands on training as a dental assistant. She will be eligible for food stamp cash out in May and her FIP case closed in March, 1998.
