The December 1996 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Lori Burrow of Marshall, a single mother of two children. Before the birth of her first child, she applied for public assistance in March 1993 to help make ends meet. She enrolled in and completed a correctional officer program, but after a tour of the prison she realized this was not the career for her so she enrolled in management classes. Pamela Nelson of Detroit was awarded with the 1996 November Achiever of the Month Award which was presented in conjunction with Homeless Awareness Week in Michigan. In December 1993, Pam's mother was hit by a car and killed and in October 1994 her husband was sent to prison. Soon after, her children were removed from her custody because she began using drugs and she found herself in the streets. Pam came to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries in November 1994 pregnant, crack addicted, homeless and she had no identification and no income. Bob Rose of Calumet, formerly of Mancelona, received the October 1996 Achiever of the Month Award. In 1987 Bob suffered a back injury as a result of an auto accident. When he recovered he worked several jobs but was unable to make ends meet for his daughter and wife. With no income and a utility shutoff pending, Bob applied for public assistance at the Antrim County FIA in February of 1996. He was referred to Work First Program and with help from his Work First Counselor, he sent out a number of resumes.

Miller presented Derinda Roberts of Detroit with the August 1996 Achiever of the Month Award. After growing up in a family that survived on AFDC benefits Derinda knew she wanted more out of life than public assistance had to offer. At the age of 18 she started taking classes at Wayne State University to become a doctor. At the age of 20 her life was shattered. While waiting for the bus to attend a review of her Medicaid case she was abducted at gun point and taken to an abandoned house where she was assaulted. Carol Sue King of Cheboygan, a single mother of four children, was awarded the July 1996 Achiever of the Month Award. After years of being in an abusive relationship, Carol Sue filed for divorce. She held a number of part-time jobs but was unable to make ends meet so she turned to the FIA for help. Carol Sue overcame transportation barriers, problems relating to her housing as well as her own health problems.

Cathy Lucier of Coldwater received the June 1996 Achiever of the Month Award. After a divorce, Cathy became the single mother of three children. Having few marketable skills and needing to take care of her family, she turned to the FIA for help in 1982. She got a job at a dime store in Greenville and worked there for eight years where she learned many new skills, but the job did not pay enough for her to be self-sufficient. She negotiated a part-time work schedule with her employer which made it possible for her to attend college.

Gerald Miller presented the May 1996 Achiever of the Month Award to Emma Luckado of Flint. As a single mother of two children, Emma first became involved with the FIA in 1982. She began working as an Administrative Assistant for a company that laid cable for the cable companies. After earning enough money to close her AFDC case, the company closed and she had to reapply for assistance in 1992. Emma participated in volunteer activities and became employed with the Salem Housing Task Force for three months during the summer of 1995. April 1996 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Deborah Collins of Menominee. Deborah ran away from her home in Kentucky at the age of 17. Soon after, she had two children and moved to Wisconsin where her husband had a job waiting. When he lost his job they moved to Michigan where Collins enrolled in night classes and received her high school diploma. To help make ends meet they turned to the Menominee County FIA. Through the JTPA program, Deborah received her certificate for stenography but due to problems at home and a lack of experience, she was unable to secure long-term employment.

Annette LittleJohn of Kalamazoo was awarded the March 1996 Achiever of the Month Award. While she was a specialist in the U.S. Army, Annette found herself a single mother of two children. Since the Army required her to move often, she decided to leave the Army and join the Michigan National Guard in Kalamazoo. Unable to find employment in Kalamazoo, Annette sought help from the Family Independence Agency. She was referred to the Work First program where she attended personal growth classes, learned interviewing techniques and received help finding employment.

The February 1996 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Harold Barton of Lake City. Harold is a single father of two who came to Michigan from Utah. With a strong work history and some college education, Harold thought finding employment would be easy but the demand for skilled workers was not great in Missaukee County and he had to turn to the Department of Social Services when all his resources were drained. January 1996 Achiever of the Month Award recognized Sharon Davis of Ypsilanti, a single mother who turned to the Department of Social Services to help make ends meet. Sharon was faced with many barriers such as a lack of transportation and child care and she suffered from very low self-esteem. She was referred to the Work First program and learned how to use a computer and she completed a resume. She received bus tokens for transportation and a clothing allowance to help her find a job. her perseverance paid off.
