| Lori Burrow |
The December 1996 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Lori Burrow of Marshall, a single mother of two children. Before the birth of her first child, she applied for public assistance in March 1993 to help make ends meet. She enrolled in and completed a correctional officer program, but after a tour of the prison she realized this was not the career for her so she enrolled in management classes. Upon reentry of the job market she discovered she was pregnant with her second child. She still wanted to go to Job Club, but counselors advised her to wait until after the baby was born. Although she could have been deferred from participation in the Work First program Lori volunteered for Job Club when her baby was six months old. She received help with child care costs, mileage to and from Job Club and job interviews, car repairs, licensing and interview clothing. She was hired at an adult foster car home as a house manager and her AFDC case was closed in December 1995. Lori gives back to her community by calling Work First to get referrals when she needs to fill a position at the adult foster care home where she works.
