DHS Achever 121993Jeffery Gurski
Because of his outstanding participation in the Mt. Pleasant school EDGE program Jeffery Gurski of Shepherd became the first man in Michigan to be honored with an Achiever of the Month Award. He was December 1993 Achiever. Gurski and his wife have been AFDC recipients twice since 1990. Their first period of eligibility was short-lived because he was able to find employment with a dairy farmer. When he was laid off, however, the family found it necessary to use public assistance again.

Things have really been coming up roses for Kim L. Davis since she was named the 1993 November Achiever of the Month. Once a troubled teenager who dropped out of high school in the eleventh grade, ran away from home, wound up in a group foster home and eventually applied for assistance, the Jackson woman today has a full-time job as counselor/court liaison with the Juvenile Diversion Program and Runaway Services of Jackson County Probate Court. DHS Achiever 101993Betty Houston
The first Achiever of the Month Award was presented in October of 1993to Betty Houston of Muskegon, a mother of six who had been a welfare recipient for 20 years. Houston said she had an attitude of hopelessness and apathy about ever becoming independent. Why seek training or education which in the AFDC world were considered to be dead-end roads? Then things began to change. DSS changed and so did Betty Houston.
