Because of his outstanding participation in the Mt. Pleasant school EDGE program Jeffery Gurski of Shepherd became the first man in Michigan to be honored with an Achiever of the Month Award. He was December 1993 Achiever.
Gurski and his wife have been AFDC recipients twice since 1990. Their first period of eligibility was short-lived because he was able to find employment with a dairy farmer. When he was laid off, however, the family found it necessary to use public assistance again.
Gurski had been screened for the EDGE program because he did not have a high school diploma. Choosing welding as his vocational interest, Gurski maintained a perfect attendance record in all components of the program and enrolled in advanced training to enhance the welding vocational component. He was recognized by his instructors as an outstanding student and honored by is fellow students for his positive personal attributes.
Upon completion of his EDGE program assignment, Gurski entered employment as a welder in a local manufacturing plant. He was considered an excellent employee because he exhibited good work habits and his skill as a neophyte welder was greater than that of most beginners.
With the encouragement of his employer and family and with help from his MOST worker, Gurski also completed high school and advanced vocational technical training in welding this spring. He is hoping one day to become a foreman.
Gurski reports that his entire experience with EDGE and AP staff, school personnel and vocational technical trainers has been positive and that he has developed a life plan that places family and employment at the center of his focus.
