December 2003
Thara and Calvin Moore The Achiever of the Month award for December 2003 was presented to Thara and Calvin Moore of Benton Harbor. Mr. and Mrs. Moore are the proud parents of three children. They first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in December 2002. At that time, the family had recently relocated from Mississippi, did not have a vehicle, could not find affordable housing and were staying with Mrs. Moore's sister.

November 2003
Kristin Brown Kristin Brown of Detroit was presented with the November 2003, Achiever of the Month award. This mother of one applied for assistance from the Family Independence Agency (FIA) in July 2001. At that time, she was pregnant, had just lost her job due to her pregnancy, was ineligible for unemployment compensation and need help providing for herself and her unborn child.

Edna Price Edna Price is the 119th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This single mother of one child, first applied for assistance in August 2002. At that time, she was pregnant, recently laid off from her job in Marquette, and had relocated to Alger County to live with her father and stepmother.

Julie Wolfe In September 2003, the Achiever of the Month award was presented to Julie Wolfe of Manistee. Ms. Wolfe is the single mother of six children.

Julie Ranville Julie Ranville is the 117th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This married mother of four children first applied to the FIA for assistance in November 1997, when she was unemployed and needed help providing for her family.

Brandi McAulay Brandi McAulay was presented with the July 2003 Achiever of the Month award. This single mother of two applied for assistance from the FIA in October 2002. At that time she was unemployed and needed financial help to provide for her family. Through the Macomb County FIA she received Family Independence Program benefits (FIP), Food Assistance and Medicaid.

Jennifer Hudson Jennifer Hudson of Cadillac was presented with the June 2003, Achiever of the Month award. This mother of two children applied to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in the early 1990’s. At that time, she was pregnant, living on her own, and badly in need of financial help to meet living expenses.

Jodie Garcia Jodie Garcia is the 114th recipient of the Family Independence Agency’s (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This mother of one first applied to the FIA for medical assistance in March 1996, while she was pregnant with her daughter.
In 2001, Jodie again turned to the FIA when she was having difficulty providing for her family. Through the Allegan County FIA, she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, day care, Medicaid and Food Assistance.

Edna Garcia Edna Garcia of Oscoda was presented with the April 2003, Achiever of the Month award. Ms. Garcia is the divorced mother of four children. Her involvement with the Family Indepedence Agency (FIA) began in September of 1997, when she was living in the Bay City area. She was a new mother, single and needed help providing for her family.

Yolanda Hightower Yolanda Hightower is the 112th recipient of the Family Independence Agency’s (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This single mother of one first applied for assistance in November 1993, when she was pregnant and needed help providing for herself and her unborn child. Although she was working, Yolanda did not have health insurance. In addition, she was placed on medical restriction and required total bed rest until her child was born.

Carmen Lueder In February 2003, the Achiever of the Month award was presented to Carmen Lueder of Spring Lake. Ms. Lueder is the single mother of one child.
She first came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in September 1999, when she was pregnant and needed help providing for herself and her unborn child. Although she was working, she had no medical insurance, no transportation and limited education.

Heather VanPelt Heather VanPelt of Grayling was presented with the January 2003, Achiever of the Month award. This mother of one child first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in June 1995. Through the Lapeer County FIA she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Food Assistance, Medicaid and child day care off and on for several years to help make ends meet.
