Governor Granholm Announces an Additional $2,000,000 in No Worker Left Behind Funding to Help Dislocated Workers in Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! Area

Contact:  Mario L. Morrow 517-373-9280
Agency: Energy, Labor & Economic Growth

June 30, 2009 - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced today an award of $2,000,000 in federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding through No Worker Left Behind to Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works!, the local Michigan Works! Agency serving Macomb and St. Clair counties.

"A highly skilled workforce is key to retaining and attracting employers who want to grow their business in Michigan," Granholm said. "This funding will help Michigan citizens upgrade their skills as they prepare to re-enter a global economy where employers are demanding more specialized skills and knowledge,"

Granholm announced the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) program on August 1, 2007; an ambitious plan to train 100,000 citizens in three years for jobs in high demand occupations and emerging industries of entrepreneurial endeavors. By reorganizing and augmenting federal funds currently used for workforce development, NWLB will provide up to two years of free tuition at any Michigan community college, university, or other approved training program for qualifying participants. As of May 31, 2009, more than 77,800 people have been put into NWLB training.

The federal Workforce Investment Act, administered through the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG), makes the grant funds available from the Governor's Discretionary Reserve, a set-aside percentage of the state's total award to be used as needed in areas highly impacted by major plant closings and layoffs that require additional funding to meet local needs.
