LANSING – The Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation (OFIR) announced today that beginning October 29, 2008 all resident and non-resident individual insurance producer licensee applications must be filed electronically via the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) Gateway. Electronic application filing is a major aspect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ uniformity initiative for state insurance departments.
“Electronic application filing will save time and money for our staff and the insurance industry—and maybe save a few trees,” said OFIR Commissioner Ken Ross.
The Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation regulates 169 domestic insurance companies, 1,303 foreign insurance companies and 146,419 insurance producers.
Incorporated in October, 1996, the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) is a non-profit affiliate of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The NIPR Gateway is a communication network that links state insurance regulators with the entities they regulate to facilitate the electronic exchange of producer information.
