Holland State Park Receives a New Camper Cabin

Contact:  Joyce Rhodes 616-399-9390
Agency: Natural Resources

Oct. 8, 2008

The Department of Natural Resources announced today that a new camper cabin has opened at Holland State Park.

The "Whitetail" cabin has a view of the Holland channel and the "Big Red" lighthouse. It accommodates six people, and includes a refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and electric heat. Outside the cabin, visitors will find a picnic table, grill and fire circle. This fully accessible camper cabin has three rooms and an outside deck that extends the cabin living space into the beautiful surroundings.

"We are very excited about our new camper cabin," said Park Manager Joyce Rhodes. "This is an opportunity for those who have never tried camping before to stay at Holland State Park without the investment into camping gear. With the cabin being available year round, we may inspire some campers to 'GO-Get Outdoors' and view the majesty of Holland and Lake Michigan in the off seasons."

The cabin was constructed for less than $10,000. The cabin represents a collaboration between the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Corrections' Prison Build Program. Funding from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund has also been used to build camper cabins at Interlochen, Lakeport, Mitchell, Onaway, Orchard Beach, Port Crescent and Tawas Point state parks, as well as the Pinckney and Waterloo recreation areas. The cabins rent for $80 per night.

This cabin is universally accessible and available to rent year round. In the warmer months, the modern restrooms and showers will be available. In the winter months, a vault toilet is available. Camping reservations can be made on-line at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-447-2757.

Holland State park is located at 2215 Ottawa Beach Rd., nine miles west of U.S. 31 and seven miles west of downtown Holland.

For more information about the cabin at Holland, the park, or accessibility at the park, contact the park supervisor at 616-399-9390 (TTY/TDD711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit the park's Web site at www.michigan.gov/holland.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
