May 14, 2008

Department of Natural Resources state park and recreation officials today announced Van Buren State Park will hold its third annual "GO-Get Outdoors" 5K run/walk and volleyball tournament June 7.

The competitive run and the "just-for-fun" walk begin in the south parking lot of the day-use area. The course covers two miles of paved roads and about one mile of an old railroad spur that has a natural gravel surface.

The run begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk stepping off at 9:05. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in the competitive run. Contact Van Buren State Park for more information about age divisions in the competitive run.

Individuals, 13 and older, are invited to play in two-person teams in the sand court volleyball tournament. Players should report to the day-use area volleyball courts by 9 a.m. Medals will be awarded to the teams that finish first through third place.

All events are free of charge to participate; however, a state park motor vehicle permit is required for entry into the park. Cost is $24 for a resident annual permit and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

To register for any of these events or for more information, contact Van Buren State Park at (269) 637-2788. The park is located at 23960 Ruggles Road in South Haven. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com or by calling (800) 447-2757.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
