Internship Opportunities at the Michigan Historical Center

The Michigan Historical Center is looking for college students who are looking to use and build their knowledge in history and other fields. This page lists all available internships at the Michigan Historical Center. Internships are unpaid.

Internships are available at our flagship site in Lansing year-round. Summer internships are available at all our museums around the state. See a map of the Michigan Historical Museum System.

Intern Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Have initiative and be self-motivated
  2. Be detail-oriented and thorough
  3. Be Interested in history
  4. Have an ability to work well alone and on a team
  5. Be willing to learn new skills
  6. Enjoy working with people—schoolchildren and adults
  7. Have good oral and written communication skills

Intern schedules are flexible, requiring a minimum ten hours per week during weekdays and/or weekends.

Archives of Michigan

General Office Intern
The Archives of Michigan seeks a student who would like to gain general office experience in an archives setting. This unpaid internship entails working with the public in the archives reception area or reading room. Includes photocopying, faxing, basic word processing, mailroom duty and pulling historical material for researchers. Must be willing to climb ladders and lift 40 pounds. Minimum Total hours: 100. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Development Office Intern
The Michigan Historical Center Foundation seeks interns possessing strong computer, writing and communication skills to:

  • Prepare solicitation/acknowledgement letters
  • Research corporate/foundation/individual prospects
  • Assist with special events
  • Assist in the planning and production of event promotions
  • Generate and maintain prospect/invitation lists
Dates and times are flexible and will be structured around the intern's school schedule. Interns will be reimbursed for parking.
