• WNV in Humans
West Nile virus is a disease of birds that can cause illness in people when they are bitten by an infected mosquito. It was first detected in Michigan citizens in August of 2002.

• WNV Risks
While the risk of developing serious illness from West Nile virus is low, people over the age of 50 and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk for developing severe illness.

• WNV Symptoms
Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms.

• WNV Prevention
Preventing West Nile virus and other arboviruses centers around controlling exposure to mosquitoes and avoiding mosquito bites.

• WNV Treatment
There is no treatment for West Nile virus illness beyond supportive care. Mild symptoms usually resolve within a few days.

• Other Arboviruses
There are arboviruses (insect-borne viruses) other than West Nile virus that occur in Michigan.
