Whereas , The Michigan Renaissance Festival has been entertaining Michigan citizens and visitors in Holly for over 29 years; and,
Whereas , The festival started in 1979 with just 11,000 patrons during its first 5-weekend event and has grown to attract more than 220,000 from Michigan and surrounding states; and,
Whereas , The festival offers a day like no other and upon stepping into the reincarnation of a 16th century village it is evident there is something for everyone to enjoy, such as the expansive showcase of arts and crafts, the abundance of foods to sample, and the interactive, comedic, musical or action-filled entertainment featured on its 16 stages and throughout lanes; and,
Whereas , The village is overflowing with talented artists, including local young artists, who offer their unique wares including glassware, crafted leather, exotic jewelry and renaissance clothing; and,
Whereas , The Michigan Renaissance Festival has a impressive record of giving back to the community, with efforts such as food drives for many local shelters, donating proceeds from its Bike Run to Harvest House, providing support and services to the Muscular Dystrophy camp in Genesee County, women's shelters, and local hospitals, including an annual visit to the children at Hurley Hospital in Flint; and now therefore be it,
Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 16 through September 29, 2008, as Michigan Renaissance Festival Month in Michigan and I encourage all citizens to visit the Festival and experience all it has to offer.
