, The first two Red Wings' Stanley Cup championships were won back-to-back in 1936 and 1937 over the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, respectively, led by hockey legends such as Ebbie Goodfellow, Larry Aurie, Herbie Lewis, Hec Kilrea and John Sorrell; and,

, Former coaches, including Hall of Fame members Jack Adams, Scotty Bowman and Tommy Ivan, have contributed to the leadership and success of the Detroit Red Wings; and,

, The Detroit Red Wings have created a legacy of octopi-throwing, puck-flying, and skate-gliding that has entertained hockey fans in the Detroit area for years; and,

, The 2007-08 Stanley Cup championship team was presented the Presidents' Trophy for garnering the most wins during the regular season with a record of 54-21 before dominating the playoffs and bringing the Stanley Cup home to Hockeytown on June 4, 2008, after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in Game 6 of the finals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and,
Whereas
, The state of Michigan joins team owner Mike Ilitch, head coach Mike Babcock, Captain Nikolas Lindstrom (the first European captain to win a Stanley Cup), and the 2008 Detroit Red Wings in celebrating the 11th Stanley Cup title in Red Wings history and the most championships of any American hockey club; and now therefore be it,

, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 6, 2008, Detroit Red Wings Day, and I join with the citizens of Michigan in supporting the Red Wings as they celebrate this momentous occasion in Detroit Red Wings and Hockeytown history.
