At the Vision & Values sessions, employees were asked to list which of their peers lived and exemplified the values of integrity, excellence, inclusion and teamwork. Janice King’s name was mentioned several times, so she is being featured in the latest “Day in the Life.”
Janice is a manager within Agency Services. She oversees a team of nine programmer/analysts who serve the Department of Community Health, specifically in Medicaid. Her team is the Reporting Team, which is responsible for reports related to Medicaid. Janice still does some analyst work, but primarily her job is to manage the team. She delegates work, ensures that the work is meeting the customer’s needs and also works to include her staff in decision-making. Janice also sits on interview panels, works in NIKU Project Management and is the lead of several big projects her team works on.
Janice has been with the State for 32 years. She began in keypunch and worked her way to being a computer operator. Then she was promoted to work as a programmer trainee, a programmer/analyst, and now she is a manager. She has always worked in some aspect of Medicaid.
The people are Janice’s favorite thing about her job. There are all different personalities and she enjoys getting to know everyone. Janice says she also likes the challenge of her job. The least favorite part of her job? Paperwork! She says the biggest change she’s had to overcome recently is due to the early retirement. “There are fewer people who now have to do more work, and it has been a challenge to manage the transition,” she says.
Away from work, Janice is an avid MSU sports fan - she’s a longtime football season ticket holder. She enjoys golfing, gardening and reading.
