Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Whereas, Developmental disabilities affect more than 190,000 Michigan children and adults in every county across our state; and,

Whereas, People with developmental disabilities make up nearly two percent of the state's population; and,

Whereas, Every person, regardless of ability, has valuable strengths, infinite capacity to learn and the potential to make important contributions to their local communities; and,

Whereas, People with developmental disabilities in Michigan share with the state's other ten million residents the right to live life as they choose in their education, jobs, recreation, and homes; and,

Whereas, Families of people with developmental disabilities deserve our admiration and recognition for their caring commitment and ongoing support that are both essential to an independent and productive life; and,

Whereas, Celebrating the abilities and contributions of people with developmental disabilities can only serve to enrich the communities of Michigan and enhance our diversity; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 2007, as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Michigan.
