Ray Lane

Whereas, Ray Lane is a fixture in Michigan sports broadcasting and for more than four decades, delighted sports fans in the course of some of the state's most exciting and memorable moments; and,

Whereas, Ray Lane, a native Detroiter, was a gifted student-athlete during the 1940s for the Stags of Mackenzie High School and later played varsity baseball at Michigan State University where, in 1953,  he earned his bachelor's degree in radio and telecommunications; and,

Whereas, At various times throughout his career, Ray Lane served as the voice of the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Red Wings, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University football, and the University of Detroit basketball; and,

Whereas, From 1967 through 1972, during some of the Detroit Tigers best seasons, including the 1968 World Series championship, Ray Lane teamed with Ernie Harwell on Detroit Tigers radio broadcasts and also worked on the Tiger's television broadcasts from 1999-2003; and,

Whereas, Ray Lane was named Michigan Sportscaster of the Year in 1969 and 1980, was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, and is a past president and an honorary lifetime member of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association, which in 2003 honored Mr. Lane with the Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting; and,

Whereas, Ray Lane is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, has been a member of the Corporate Leadership Board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Detroit since 1972, and an active fundraiser for the United Foundation and the Sanctuary in Royal Oak; and,

Whereas, Ray Lane remains dedicated to numerous charities and the great state of Michigan, which he proudly calls home;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 3, 2009, Ray Lane Day in Michigan in recognition of Mr. Lane's notable contributions and exemplary achievements in sports broadcasting.  On behalf of the people of the state of Michigan, I congratulate Mr. Lane for his illustrious career and life accomplishments and offer best wishes for the future.
