Building Safety Week

Whereas, The United States has the highest standard of building safety in the world; and,

Whereas, The International Code Council, in partnership with dedicated building safety and fire officials, architects, engineers, and the construction industry, develops and enforces the codes that safeguard us in our homes, at school, and the buildings we work in; and,

Whereas, Building safety affects so many aspects of our daily lives and thanks to building safety code enforcement, we enjoy the comfort of structures that are safe and sound; and,

Whereas, From preventing mold in homes, to minimizing the impact of West Nile Virus in communities, building safety and fire officials work with citizens to address concerns every day, and they play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our critical infrastructure; and,

Whereas, Construction codes provide reasonable safeguards to protect us from dangerous situations such as snowstorms in the North, hurricanes in the Southeast, tornadoes in the Midwest, forest fires in the Southwest, and earthquakes on the West Coast; and,

Whereas, Building Safety Week is an opportunity to educate the public and serves as a time to increase public awareness of the life safety services provided by local and state building departments as well as federal agencies; and,

Whereas, Building Safety Week’s theme is, “Safe Buildings Save Lives,” and it encourages all of Michigan’s residents to raise awareness of building safety and to take appropriate steps to improve our built environment; and,

Whereas, Construction codes have improved the safety and security of our citizens and countless lives have been saved because of the construction codes adopted and enforced by local and state agencies; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of April 6, 2003, Building Safety Week in Michigan.
