Motown Day

Whereas, Forging new ground for minorities, Berry Gordy founded the Motown Records Company in 1959, and a national phenomenon was born; and,

Whereas, Motown and its soul-based subsidiaries brought a new style of soul music with a distinct pop influence that later became known as "The Motown Sound" to listeners across the country; and,

Whereas, The Motown Records Company label primarily featured African-American artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Jackson 5 who forever changed the sound of music; and,

Whereas, With several songs to top the charts in the past, the hits of Motown have remained a major influence on today's biggest pop and R&B artists; and,

Whereas, Motown stands for more than just music; it is a reflection of the hard work of dedicated individuals who overcame incredible obstacles to achieve great success;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 12, 2009, Motown Day in Michigan.  I encourage all citizens to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Motown Records Company by not only remembering the artists and the people who helped to build Motown, but to also grab your favorite record and sing along.
