Michigan Week 2009 Youth Photo Contest Regional Winners

The Michigan Week Youth Photo Contest invites young photographers around the state to capture views of their favorite historic sites. This contest is coordinated by Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries, with additional financial support comes from the Michigan Barn Preservation Network.

Below are the regional winners (runners-up) in the Michigan Week 2009 Youth Photo Contest. Click here to see the 12 state winners for 2009.

Junior Division (ages 9-12)


Arindale School
Manistee, Michigan

"I chose to photograph this site because it is over 100 years old. It still has the original playground equipment. 4-H meetings have been held here."



Fort St. Philippe de Michilimackinac
Mackinaw City, Michigan

"I chose to photograph this site because of a fifth grade class trip. Fort St. Philippe de Michilimackinac was founded and constructed by French soldiers in 1715. Archaeologists have been excavating the remains of the fort and are currently reconstructing it to look as it would hundreds of years earlier."

Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse
Munising, Michigan

"It was one of the first lighthouses built on Lake Superior."



Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot
Port Huron, Michigan

"I chose to photograph this site because I visited it in second grade. It was part of the Underground Railroad and immigration. Thomas A. Edison started his career there as a boy."



Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

"This site is important to Michigan to see how others lived."



Paper Mill School
Monroe, Michigan

"I like that it sits on the River Raisin. My grandmother went to school there."

Fayette Historic Townsite
Garden, Michigan

"Fayette was once the U.P's most productive iron smelting operations."



Lawrence Skeba's Barn
Lake Leelanau, Michigan

"The original barn burned. This barn, constructed in 1937, was a traditional ?barn raising' carried out by neighboring farmers. The Skeba family bought the farm from Herb Baughey who owned Boughey Bottling Co. of Traverse City."



Navaree-Anderson Trading Post
Monroe, Michigan

"It is the oldest wooden residence still standing in the state. It was moved twice, and it originally stood on Willow Street in Monroe."

"Built in the late 1870's, the barn was constructed using logs from several structures."



Forty Mile Point Lighthouse
Rogers City, Michigan

"Together with nearby attractions, this preserves the history of the area."



Marquette Harbor Lighthouse
Marquette, Michigan

"I like lighthouses. They protect the commerce of shipping."



Rawson's King Mill
Leonidas, Michigan

"Leonidas is very small and the tourism is great for the community. In 1900 a Leffel turbine was installed and is still operating today."



Skalnican Homestead
Midland, Michigan

"The homestead will be celebrating its centennial in June 2010."



Wellers Carriage House
Saline, Michigan

"Henry Ford bought the mill and turned it into a factory for ball bearings."
