Missing Michigan Historical Markers

Public Act 488 of 2002 prohibits the removal of official state historical markers from their designated site without written permission. Persons caught with a marker in their possession face up to 93 days in jail and a $5,000 fine, plus the cost of repairing, reinstalling, and/or replacing the marker.

Anyone who knows of the location of a missing marker is encouraged to contact his or her sheriff or local police department. They may also contact the State Historic Preservation Office at (517) 373-1630.

What do Michigan historical markers look like?  The typical marker is either 24" x 36" or 42" x 54" in size, with textual information on one or both sides.  It is made of cast aluminum, and features gold letters set on a green background, with a wolverine and the words "Michigan Registered Historic Site" at the top.  Less common is the 12" x 14" wall-mounted plaque.
