State Data Center/Business and Industry Data Center (SDC/BIDC) Program

The State Data Center/Business and Industry Data Center Program is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Census and each of the nation's 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. It was established in 1978 by the Census Bureau to improve access to and expand the use of Census Bureau statistical resources and related products by researchers, government planning and decision makers, the business sector, and the general public. Awareness and use of public data and information is enhanced with training and technical assistance delivered through a network of state agencies, universities, libraries, regional and local governments, and other organizations throughout the nation.

In Michigan, the State Data Center/Business and Industry Data Center (SDC/BIDC) Program is coordinated by staff atthe Library of Michigan, which is part of the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries. In addition, Library of Michiganpersonnel serve as program staff to the Governor's Census 2000 liaison. Our State Demographer represents Michigan through membership on the U.S. Census Bureau'sFederal-State Cooperative Programs for Population Estimates (FSCPE) and Population Projections (FSCPP)Program. Together, these programs areMichigan's official source for demographic, economic, and social data.

The Michigan State Data Center/Business and Industry Data Center Program provides extended servicesvia astatewide network of affiliate organizations, including two program coordinating agencies, and numerous affiliate members located throughout both the upper and lower peninsula. Having such an extensive network of affiliate enables us to provide users withaccurate, timely, and useful information and consulting services.

For more information on the Michigan SDC/BIDC Program, including how your agency may be eligible for membership, please contact Ken Darga at (517) 373-9654.
