Artrain USA
The Council's continued leadership with underserved communities is a new grant to Artrain USA. Scheduled to begin October 1, 2008, this new partnership could be viewed as a return to our roots.
Inspired by Mr. E. Ray Scott and Mrs. Helen Milliken, a former First Lady of Michigan, Artrain USA was created by the Michigan Council for the Arts as its inaugural program. The goal of the Michigan Artrain (their original name) was to provide opportunities to under-represented, rural and low-income Michigan residents through art and art education and to encourage the development of local arts councils.
The Council has awarded Artrain USA a partnership to once again provide those community development programs in underserved areas of Michigan. The Council believes that, much like Artrain did more than 30 years ago, this partnership will be the catalyst for the development of new arts organizations in underserved communities.

The Michigan Youth Arts Festival
In partnership with MCACA the Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) offers high schoolers a one of a kind opportunity. Unique in the nation, the MYAF began in 1963 as a talent screening of young musicians organized by Dr. Joseph Maddy, founder of the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Today, MYAF is a comprehensive arts spectacular, culminating a nine-month search for the finest artistic talent in Michigan high schools. More than 250,000 students across the state are involved in the adjudication process that results in nearly 1,000 being invited to participate in the annual three-day event, held in May. This May the festival will occur on May 7-9, 2009 in Kalamazoo on the campus of Western Michigan University.
