Who Needs a License?

 Any person, firm, partnership, association or corporation engaged in the business of growing, selling or re-shipping nursery stock or herbaceous perennials must be licensed in the state of Michigan.

Who does not need a nursery license?

Those who only sell annual flower or vegetable plants are not required to obtain a license to sell within the state.

What types of nursery license are there?

Grower, dealer and dealer market licenses are the primary types.  Growers who have less than ¼ acre of stock or less than 200 square feet of greenhouse space may qualify for a small-scale grower license, which is determined by MDA inspection staff.

What fees are required in obtain a dealer license?

A license fee of $100 must be paid.

What fees are needed to obtain a grower license?

The license fee and an inspection fee must be paid.  Inspections fees are based on acres inspected.

What else is needed to get either of these licenses?

Growers must have their stock inspected by MDA and found to be free from serious pests before it may be sold or moved from one location to another. Growers must arrange for an inspection of their nursery stock or herbaceous perennials by contacting the MDA regional office that serves their county.

Dealers do not need to arrange for an inspection; however the stock they buy and sell must have been inspected and certified free of pests and diseases.

How Do I apply for a New nursery license License?

Growers must arrange for an inspection of stock by MDA.  Once the stock passes inspection our field staff will initiate the application process and furnished a completed application form to the new grower.   

If We Have Sent in an Application, When Can We Begin buying and selling nursery stock?

Once the application is approved by MDA you may begin. 

When Do Nursery Licenses Expire?

October 31st of each year.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Avoid Having My License Renewal Delayed? 

Make sure you have signed the form and enclosed the proper amount for payment.  Licenses cannot be issued for unsigned application forms or partial payment.
