Burden of Cardiovascular Disease

Consensus Reports

 A new report, Impact of Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young in Michigan, led by the MDCH Genomics Section with support from the Cardiovascular Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity Section, summarizing data in Michigan for cardiac deaths of unknown cause in populations under age 40.  This report includes surveillance data as well as symposium and small group work to identify opportunities for prevention.

 A newly released MDCH publication on the Impact of Heart Disease and Stroke in Michigan: 2008 Report on Surveillance, provides a comprehensive report on cardiovascular disease (CVD), heart disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, risk factors associated with CVD and some of the resources/facilities of interest in reducing and controlling CVD in Michigan. This publication is the product of the Michigan Cardiovascular Alliance, Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section and the Cardiovascular Health, Nutrition and Physicial Activity Section and will inform the strategic planning that will begin in September to identify priority initiatives in the state to reduce the burden of CVD in Michigan.   

 The Economic Cost of Physical InactivityThis report describes the burden and cost of physical inactivity in Michigan. (2003)

Five-year plan to address the epidemic of obesity in Michigan
The Five-Year State Plan to Address the Epidemic of Obesity was developed as a requirement of the Centers for Disease Control, as a condition of funding the Michigan Department of Community Health to combat obesity. It represents the ideas and projects of many partners projected over the next five years. (2005)

Annual Implementation and Partnership Plan Serves as a guide for the activities and collaborations that will occur this year to accomplish the objectives of the state's Five-Year Strategic Plan. The Partnership Plan gives specific information about efforts to improve the Healthy Weight Partnership by increasing the quality of participation and the diversity of the membership.

  Great Lakes Stroke Burden Document 
A report that describes the burden of stroke in the Great Lakes States: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota. (2008)

The Great Lakes Regional Stroke Network Regional Public Health Action Plan for Stroke is a plan for improving stroke in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.  The plan was produced in 2007 by a team from all of these states.

Improving Cardiovascular Health in Michigan: 2003 Update on the Continuing Challenge
Executive Summary. This document is an update on the cardiovascular problem in Michigan with recommendations from a statewide task force to reduce the CVD burden. (2003)

 Michigan Stroke Initiative Report and Recommendations:
This report is the first state report on the burden of stroke and recommendations for improving stroke care in Michigan. This document has guided the programs offered by MDCH and those supported by our partners in the Michigan Stroke Initiative. (2000)

Fact Sheets

  Women and Cardiovascular Disease in Michigan Fact Sheet  shows the latest data about Cardiovascular Disease in women (CVD) which is a term that describes many different diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels, such as heart disease, coronary disease, stroke, heart failure and peripheral arterial disease.  CVD is one of the greatest health risks facing American women today, it is estimated that nearly 35% of the women in the United States presently have cardiovascular disease. (February 2009)

  Highlights of the 2007 MiBRFS Trends in Physical Activity  This brief summary of key findings from the Michigan BRFS provides information on the percent of Michigan residents reporting on obesity, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, heart attacks, stroke, and diabetes and it features the trends in physical activity.

  Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease This American Heart Association Fact Sheet describes the heart disparities nationally in cardiovascular disease.  Topics discussed include disparity gap, quality of healthcare and challenges.

 Fast Food Consumption in Michigan:   Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Brief  This new surveillance brief describes the prevalence of fast food consumption and related behaviors between fast food consumption and obesity.

 Childhood Overweight Prevention and Healthy School Environments
This fact sheet contains current statistics and outlines key Michigan initiatives to promote healthy school environments. (2005)

 Diseases of the Heart Fact Sheet:
An in depth report of heart disease in Michigan. Mortality data as well as risk factor surveillance data are reported with a Michigan map with county rate status. (2006)

This fact sheet developed by the American Heart Association Midwest Affliate, provides a summary of the CVD burden in Michigan women. (2006)
