| Three New Vaccines are Added to Michigan's VFC Program |
As a result of the recent Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting and the issuance of new Vaccines for Children (VFC) Resolutions, on August 1, 2008, the VFC program added the use of a pentavalent vaccine DTaP-Hib-IPV combination (Pentacel® by Sanofi), a quadrivalent vaccine DTaP-IPV combination (Kinrix™ by GSK), and a new rotavirus vaccine RV1 (Rotarix® by GSK). The addition of these new vaccines brings new possibilities of ways to vaccinate children.
- Pentacel® DTAP-Hib-IPV:
The combined DTaP-Hib-IPV vaccine may be used when any component of the combination is indicated and if the other components are not contraindicated. The combined DTaP-Hib-IPV vaccine is approved for the primary series and first booster dose (Doses 1-4). The combination vaccine is not indicated for children 5 years of age and older.
- Kinrix™ DTAP-IPV:
The combined DTaP-IPV may be used when any component of the combination is indicated and if the other components are not contraindicated. The combined DTaP-IPV vaccine is approved for the booster dose at 4-6 yrs.
- Rotarix® RV1:
This vaccine is indicated for infants aged 6 weeks to 8 months; it is given in two doses, at ages 2 and 4 months. This is a live vaccine that must be reconstituted and will result in a 1mL dose, given orally.

All providers should plan to incorporate these new vaccines into their practices. However, remember with all new vaccines, wastage of vaccines currently in vaccine inventories is a concern. Providers are urged to be cautious with inventory of single antigens or those with other combinations such at Pediarix®. Expiration of these vaccines should not occur due to uptake of new vaccines.
The Michigan VFC program has begun taking order for all of these new vaccines. These vaccines are available for children as indicated by age. VFC vaccines may be given to VFC-eligible patients (including the underinsured) seen in all VFC provider offices.

local health department's
immunization program.
