Become a Substitute Teacher
|
- Have a minimum of 90 semester hours of satisfactory credit consolidated at a four-year regionally accredited college/university.
(The individual must have a transcript from a four-year regionally accredited college/university showing at least 90 semester hours of satisfactory credit completed, including any transfer credit that was accepted by the college/university.)

Become a High School Teacher with Full Year Permit
|
- Hold a bachelors degree or higher. If a core content subject as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) (math, social studies, English, reading, language arts, science, foreign language, and arts) must hold a major in the content or have passed the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)content exam.

Become a High School Teacher with a Section 1223b Permit
|
- Hold a bachelors degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Has a major or graduate degree in computer science, foreign languages, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, physics, or robotics.

Two years of experience in the field of specialization within the past 5 years, with exception of foreign languages.
OR
-
Currently enrolled in completing credit toward appropriate certification or endorsement at an approved teacher preparation institution.

Become a High School Teacher with an Emergency Permit
|
- Current enrollment and Completion of at least 90 semester credit hours in a teacher preparation program.
OR
- Hold a Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Has a major or graduate degree in the subject area that will be taught
Note:
Only issued in emergency situations.

Become a High School Teacher as a Military Veteran (Troops to Teachers)
|
Facilitates veterans in their efforts to become certificated, then assists with placements into appropriate public schools.
- Honorable Discharge
- Six years of military service

Become a School Bus Driver
|
Legal Requirements Include:
- Pass an annual physical examination
- Successfully complete the beginning school bus driver safety education course
- Possess a chauffeur's license and a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with P (passenger) and S (school bus) endorsement.
- Pass a criminal background check
- Comply with drug and alcohol testing requirements
- Driver record check to be in compliance with penalty points for moving violation standards

- You must apply to your local school district, intermediate school district, or private vendor for substitute teaching positions.

Steps to Teaching with a Full Year Permit
|
- If the district is unable to fill the position with an appropriately certified teacher, a district can apply for a full-year permit on your behalf as a non-certificated teacher.
- You must be willing to complete a teacher preparation program
- You must be assigned a mentor and you have 3 years to complete a teacher preparation program in accordance with NCLB highly qualified teacher requirements if teaching core content.

Steps to Teaching with a Section 1223b Permit
|
- If the district is unable to fill the position with an appropriately certified teacher, a district can apply for this permit on your behalf as a non-certified teacher in grades 9-12 in subject areas of computer science, foreign languages, mathematics, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, or robotics.

Steps to Teaching with an Emergency Permit
|
- An emergency permit may be issued in emergency situations where children would be denied an education in non-core content areas per No Child Left Behind (NCLB). This excludes math, social studies, English, reading, language arts, science, foreign language, and the arts.

Steps to Teaching as a Military Veteran
|
Participants may be granted up to a $5,000 bonus or a $10,000 stipend, both of which require teaching in a Michigan or Indiana high needs school for at least 3 years. For more information: Troops to Teachers

Alternative Steps to Getting Certification in Michigan
|
MDE is currently revising the criteria for alternate route programs, but some teacher preparation institutions offer expedited programs through the experimental programs options. These programs may take approximately one year to complete. Institutions currently offering pilot programs are:
- Central Michigan University
- Wayne State University
- Saginaw Valley State University
- Grand Valley State University
- Ferris State University
- Oakland University
Those individuals who wish to obtain certification should contact one or more of these universities to determine if the program(s) they offer will meet their needs.

Steps to Driving a School Bus
|
Contact a local school district near you to inquire about possible school bus driver vacancies.
School districts within Michigan are in continual need of qualified individuals to serve as school bus drivers and substitute drivers. Many times permanent positions are filled from the substitute school bus driver ranks.
It is important that potential candidates be dependable, self-reliant, but especially enjoys working with children of all ages.
