Troops to Teachers

The Troops to Teachers program has as a primary goal the recruiting and placement of quality retiring active duty and reserve military personnel into Michigan classrooms and administrative positions.    Troops to Teachers  cannot alter or circumvent existing certification requirements.  Rather, it facilitates veterans in their efforts to become certificated, then assists with potential placements into appropriate school districts.  It is authorized and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, managed by the Department of Defense, and implemented with an office in the Michigan Department of Education.

Although available to all school districts, this program focuses on high needs, low income schools, with emphasis upon mathematics, science, and special education. The retention rate of those having been placed is 75%; while research indicates performance ratings are well above average.  85% are males and 35% are minorities.  42% are teaching mathematics, science, or special education.  Our participants may be granted up to a $5,000 bonus for teaching in a high needs school district for at least 3 years or up to a $10,000 stipend for teaching in a Michigan high needs school for at least 3 years.

The Spouses To Teachers Program is new, and now available for spouses of those serving in the military. Advisory services regarding transition to teaching is available to those qualifying as well as a $600 stipend to assist with teacher certification examination costs.

Troops to Teachers   is growing throughout the United States and especially in Michigan, where the program began in February 2002. Not only do our veterans possess an excellent skill set but they have also worked for years in a drug-free culture and environment, provide mature leadership, are goal oriented, and are among the finest role models for students.  We would be pleased to visit a school district upon request, or provide further information about the advantages of forming a partnership.
