What
is DAPCEP?
The
Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) is the premier pre-college
engineering, science and technology initiative in metropolitan Detroit and the
nation.
DAPCEP is dedicated to increasing the number
of historically under-represented minority students (African-American,
Hispanic-American and Native-American) who are motivated and prepared
academically to pursue careers in engineering, science and mathematics-related
fields.
What
are DAPCEP students?
DAPCEP students are
enrolled in school districts across metropolitan Detroit. The program is open to
students in grades K-12.
DAPCEP Programs
In School:
DAPCEP
trains Detroit Public School teachers to present the DAPCEP curriculum, which
includes Internet training, science fair projects, multi-cultural projects,
field trips, corporate and university seminars, mentors and hands-on experiments
for more than 1,700 Detroit Public Schools students.
Summer Enrichment:
Several Michigan universities offer
on-campus enrichment programs in computer science, mathematics, science,
engineering and communications. Each summer more than 750 students participate
in these residential and computer programs.
Saturday Enrichment:
Colleges, universities and corporations
conduct several diverse programs in the area of mathematics, computer science,
engineering, physics, chemistry and communications skill for more than 4,000
students.
Kindergarten-Grade 3:
Through a partnership with Visteon
Automotive, DAPCEP has expanded training in engineering to include K-3. The
program is designed to reach students at an early age to interest them in the
fields of engineering, science and math.
Job
Preparation Institute:
DAPCEP
offers workshops in resume writing, job interviewing and job etiquette/employer
expectations to prepare students in grades 10-12 for summer employment with
Detroit-area corporations.
