West Michigan Traffic Management Center Grand Rapids ITS project
The West Michigan Traffic Management Center (TMC) is MDOT's ITS center for West Michigan, which began formal operations in April 2006. The West Michigan TMC staff oversees a traffic monitoring system covering approximately 24 freeway miles in the greater Grand Rapids area, instrumented with:
  • 23 Closed Circuit TV Cameras
  • 11 Dynamic Message Signs
  • 4 Variable Speed Signs
  • 42 Vehicle Detectors

    Title What We Are Doing
    A fiber-optic based communications system incorporates the camera video, message signs, and vehicle detector data and transmits the data via roadside cabinets located at each equipment site to a central switching center for distribution to the operations centers. Wireless and cellular communications are in place to communicate to devices located outside the fiber network. >More info
