June 26, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that several American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) projects will begin shortly after the Independence Day holiday in the Metro Region. These projects were opened to competitive bidding in June, and are part of the more than $246 million in federal funds dedicated to improving the region's transportation network.

The following projects will begin in July and most will have a 2009 completion date. For up-to-date information on these projects, go to the list of statewide lane closures at: www.michigan.gov/drive.

In Wayne County, two projects are scheduled for US-24 (Telegraph Road). Southbound US-24 will be repaired and resurfaced from Joy to Plymouth roads in Dearborn Heights. As part of this $1.3 million investment, utility upgrades will be included which will benefit the local community. Further south, both directions of US-24 will be repaired and resurfaced in Flat Rock. This $362,000 investment will take place between Vreeland Road and South Huron River Drive.

In the city of Detroit, bridge crews will make needed repairs to 13 overpasses above I-96 between Livernois and Davison avenues. This $22 million investment will ensure safety for thousands of motorists who use the freeway and surface streets on a daily basis. The overpass repairs are expected to be completed in fall 2010.

A listing of Michigan ARRA road and bridge projects is available on the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/mdot.
