June 26, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing over 65 percent of lane restrictions on state routes this weekend to accommodate Fourth of July holiday traffic.
Beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 2, and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, July 6, 111 out of 164 projects statewide will be free of lane restrictions.
"We urge all motorists to drive with caution through work zones during this busy summer holiday weekend," said MDOT Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Temporarily suspending many of our projects will make travel more convenient over the long Fourth of July holiday when an estimated 1.1 million motorists will be on the road."
To help make this holiday weekend a safe and enjoyable one, motorists are advised to obey the posted speed limits, drive with caution, and pay close attention to road signs and orange barrels as they navigate construction zones.
Since 2006, highway construction zone speed-limit signs with "Where Workers Present 45" have required motorists to reduce their speed to 45 mph where workers are present. Motorists can maintain the posted speed limit, except when in the vicinity of workers. This change helped reduce the number of work zone crashes, injuries and fatalities last year, while improving traffic flow in those areas.
As always, before planning your route, MDOT advises motorists to check the MI Drive Web site at www.michigan.gov/drive. Click the "MDOT Halts Most Work for Holiday" notice for holiday travel information.
Following is a list of the 53 work zones that will remain active, or have some lane restrictions, during the Fourth of July weekend. If necessary, detour routes will be posted at the project location.
Upper Peninsula
- M-64 in Ontonagon County will have temporary signals at the Townline Creek and Floodwater River bridges.
- US-2 in Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, will have lane reductions and a traffic shift.
- US-2 Cut River Bridge, Mackinac County, will remain closed with traffic detoured on Cut River Road and Prater Boulevard.
- US-41/Shelden Avenue in downtown Houghton and US-41 through the Michigan Technological University campus, Houghton County, will be closed to through-traffic. Northbound US-41 traffic will be detoured to Montezuma Avenue. Southbound US-41 traffic will be detoured on M-26, Sharon Avenue, and MacInnes Drive.

Northern Lower Peninsula
- I-75 Business Loop (BL), M-72 east to M-72 west, Grayling, Crawford County: Northbound I-75 BL traffic will be detoured onto local streets. One lane of southbound traffic is maintained on I-75 BL. Access will be provided to all cross-streets and businesses. Traffic and speed restrictions will be in place throughout the weekend. Northbound I-75 BL will have one lane available for access to downtown businesses. Northbound through-traffic will be detoured around the project location on city streets. In addition, alternate routes are posted on I-75 and M-72 west.
- M-22 bridge over Glen Lake (narrows), Leelanau County, has a detour in place.
- M-32 over south branch of Thunder Bay River, Alpena County, will have a temporary signal.
- M-37 over the Little Manistee River, Lake County, will have a temporary signal in place for bridge replacement.
- M-115 from the Clare/Osceola County line to M-61, Osceola County, will have shoulder closures in effect with all lanes open.
- US-23 Business Route (BR) over the Calcite Quarry, Presque Isle County, will have lane shifts.
- US-131 BR/Mitchell Street, city of Cadillac, Wexford County, will have a minimum of one lane in each direction open from Pearl to River streets.

West Michigan
- I-96, Kent County, eastbound ramp to M-21 will be closed with detour posted.
- I-196 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, eastbound off-ramp to College Avenue will be closed. The College Avenue ramp onto westbound I-196 will be closed as well. Detours will be posted.
- I-196/Baldwin Interchange, Kent County, will have a traffic shift in effect with two lanes open westbound and one lane open eastbound. Ramps closed include the 44th Street ramp to eastbound I-196, the eastbound Chicago Drive ramp to eastbound I-196, and the westbound Chicago Drive ramp to westbound I-196.
- M-20 in Remus, Mecosta County, will be closed to through-traffic between 70th and 40th avenues. Traffic will be detoured from M-20 south on 70th Avenue, east on 5 Mile and Cypress, then north on M-66 back to M-20.
- M-91 in Greenville, Montcalm County, will have a traffic shift in place from Van Deinse Road to Wise Road. Northbound and southbound M-91 will be reduced to one lane each. Width restriction: nothing over 10 feet.
- Tyler Road over US-31, Oceana County, will be reduced to one lane with both directions maintained with a temporary signal.
- US-131 at 44th Street, Kent County, will have two lanes open on northbound and southbound lanes. The southbound US-131 exit ramp (Exit 79) at 44th Street is closed. Detour: exit at 36th Street (Exit 80) to Burlingame or Division Avenues to 44th Street. The northbound US-131 entrance ramp from 44th Street is closed. Detour: 44th Street to Division or Burlingame Avenues to the US-131 interchange at 36th Street. There will be no work on 44th Street during the holiday weekend.

Southwest Michigan
- I-94, from Mile Marker 4 to Mile Marker 10, Berrien County, will be reduced to two lanes in each direction with the median lanes closed and traffic shifted.
- I-94 over Riverside Bridge in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, will have the following restrictions in place: 8.5 feet maximum width; no overweight vehicles.
- I-94 at I-69 in Marshall, Calhoun County, will have the following restrictions in place: 10 feet maximum width; no overweight vehicles on I-69/I-94 ramps.
- I-94 BL through downtown Benton Harbor, Berrien County, will be reduced to one lane in the westbound direction. Eastbound traffic will be detoured.
- I-196, Allegan County, will have northbound and southbound lane closures from 71st Street to 118th Avenue.
- M-40 over the Rabbit River in Hamilton, Allegan County, will have traffic maintained with a temporary traffic signal.
- M-51 over McKinzie Creek north of Niles, Berrien County, will be reduced to one lane in alternating directions using traffic signals.
- US-31 from US-12 to the Michigan/Indiana state line: traffic shifted with two southbound lanes and one northbound lane open. Traffic will be separated by a temporary concrete barrier.
- US-12 in Quincy, Branch, County, will have the following restrictions in place: 8.5 feet maximum width; no overweight vehicles. Detour will be posted

Central Michigan and Thumb
- I-69, Genesee and Lapeer counties, traffic shifted to westbound lanes from M-15 to M-24 with one lane open in each direction; ramps and bridges remain open to traffic.
- I-69 Swartz Creek Rest Area, Genesee County, will remain closed. All lanes on I-69 will be open to traffic.
- I-675, Saginaw County, will have one lane open from the I-675/I-75 north junction to the Tittabawassee Road exit. I-675 is completely closed from the Tittabawassee Road exit south to the 5th/6th Street exits, with one lane open from the 5th/6th Street exits south to the I-675/I-75 south junction.
- M-21 over I-75, Genesee County, will remain closed with traffic detoured. All lanes on I-75 beneath M-21 are open to traffic.
- M-25 (Center Avenue) from Johnson Street to Livingston Avenue in Bay City, Bay County, will have eastbound and westbound truck traffic rerouted via M-84, Kosciuszko Avenue, and Pine Road. Eastbound and westbound car traffic will be rerouted via M-84, Kosciuszko Avenue and Scheurmann Road.
M-13 (ARRA) project from M-21 to M-57
- M-13 box culvert at Hudson Drain, north of Old Corunna Road/Ardel Drive and south of Copas Road, Genesee and Shiawassee counties, will maintain one lane of alternating traffic using temporary traffic signals.
- M-13 bridge over Mistequay Creek, north of Beecher Road and south of Potter/Cronk roads, Genesee and Shiawassee counties, will maintain one lane of alternating traffic using temporary traffic signals.
- M-13 box culvert at Bailey Drain, north of Mt. Morris Road and south of Frances/Johnstone roads, Genesee and Shiawassee counties, will maintain one lane of alternating traffic using temporary traffic signals.

Southern Mid-Michigan
- Farm Lane on the campus of Michigan State University, Ingham County, north of Mt. Hope Road, will be closed with a detour posted.
- I-96 between US-23 and the Livingston/Oakland county line will have three lanes maintained in each direction with a traffic shift. Also, Kensington Road over I-96 is closed with a detour posted.
- M-49 in Litchfield, Hillsdale County, is closed through the downtown area with a detour posted.
- M-49 in Reading, Hillsdale County, has southbound traffic detoured around the downtown area. Northbound M-49 traffic is being maintained.
- M-99 in the city of Hillsdale, Hillsdale County, will have one lane maintained in each direction with a traffic shift.
- US-127 southbound ramp to eastbound I-96, Ingham County, will have one lane open. Also, the Dunckel Road bridge over US-127 is closed with a detour posted.
- US-127 from Ayers to Floyd Road, Jackson County, will have one lane maintained in each direction with a traffic shift.

Metro Detroit Region
City of Detroit
- The eastbound and westbound M-102 (Eight Mile Road) Service Drive bridges are closed over M-10. Detours are posted for access to northbound and southbound M-10 entrance ramps.
Wayne County
- Eastbound and westbound US-12 (Michigan Avenue) has two lanes open over the Rouge River Bridge in Dearborn for ongoing bridge replacement work. The eastbound US-12 entrance ramp to southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) and the eastbound US-12 exit to northbound Evergreen Road are closed and detoured.
- The ramps from eastbound M-153 (Ford Road) to Evergreen Road, and the ramp from southbound Evergreen Road to eastbound M-153, are closed in Dearborn for ongoing interchange repair.
Macomb County
- The left lanes of eastbound and westbound I-696 are closed between I-94 and M-97 (Groesbeck Highway).
- Two lanes are maintained on northbound and southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) between 18 Mile Road and 27 Mile Road via traffic shifts. The 26 Mile Road overpass above M-53 is closed and detoured.
- The entrance ramps from Mound Road to eastbound and westbound I-696 are closed. Detours are posted.
Oakland County
- The ramp from southbound M-5 to westbound I-96 is closed with a posted detour.
- The following overpasses above I-696 have lane restrictions: Southfield Road, Greenfield Road, and Coolidge Highway.
St. Clair County
- Eastbound and westbound I-94 has one lane maintained with all traffic using the westbound side of the freeway via a traffic shift between 26 Mile Road and St. Clair Highway for ongoing reconstruction. The Richmond Rest Area along westbound I-94 and the Adair Rest Area off eastbound I-94 are both closed.
- Eastbound and westbound I-69 have one lane maintained each with all traffic using the westbound side of the freeway via a traffic shift between Miller Road and the St. Clair/Lapeer county line for ongoing reconstruction. The Capac Road overpass above I-69 is reduced to a single lane with traffic controlled via a temporary signal.
