"If we compare our lives to dramas with various themes and dramatic plot lines, then old age is the time when the meaning of the play become clear to us." --Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
Spirituality...thinking about, wondering about, and exploring life's meaning, value, morals, and purpose. It's about all the ways in which we try to make sense of our living and our attempts to make good from our lives--a wholeness of being. And more and more research is pointing to the benefits that come to people whose spirituality is (or becomes) more central to their existence as they age.
While the World Health Organization defines "health" as the wellbeing of the physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions of a person, the spiritual component is most often minimized. In fact, a growing body of research shows dramatic connections between spiritual beliefs and wellness. Studies have suggested, for example, the positive link between those who feel they are spiritual and lower levels of depression/anxiety, lower blood pressure, fewer strokes, and a general sense of wellbeing. Meditation can help to increase brain function and improve concentration and memory. This is all good news.
So think about how YOU can find meaning in your later years. Write your life story...try personal meditation...seek self acceptance...resolve your fears...consider what you want your legacy to be...mentor someone...continue your service to others...forge social connections with family and friends. These are just a few of the countless ways in which to search for personal meaning in your life as you age. Just as people age in different ways, every spiritual journey is unique and special.
