Motor Carrier

The Michigan Public Service Commission is responsible for the insurance and safety regulation of the intrastate for-hire trucking industry and the rate and consumer protection regulation of the intrastate household goods moving industry. The Commission processes applications for new or expanded operating authority, registers intrastate motor vehicles and the vehicles of interstate motor carriers conducting business in Michigan, and maintains on file proof of insurance of the motor carriers.

	Counter Business Hours:
	* Monday - Friday (closed on State Holidays)
	* 8:00 a.m. to noon
	* 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
	*Note:* Transactions filed after 11:30 a.m. may be processed after 1:00 p.m. of the same day. Transactions filed after 4:30 p.m. may be processed the next work day.

Unified Carrier Registration
If you operate a truck or bus in interstate or international commerce there is a new federal law that applies to your business. The Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) Program requires individuals and companies that operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate or international commerce to register their business with the Michigan Public Service Commission and pay an annual fee based on the size of their fleet.

CHANGE IN REGULATION OF HOUSEHOLD GOODS CARRIERS
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm signed into law Public Act 33 of 2007. Public Act 33 amends the Michigan Motor Carrier Act (Public Act 254 of 1933). Public Act 33 will result in some significant changes in how household goods movers will operate in Michigan.
