Bellows, a native Ohioan who rejected suggestions to play professional
baseball, turned to painting. After studying at Ohio State University,
Bellows moved to New York City where he became a student of Robert Henri
and the New York School of Art. He first achieved recognition in 1908.
Bellow's "Dempsey against Firpo" recounts the September 1923 fight where
Dempsey successfully defended his title in a tough match with contender
