Calley signs bill honoring State Police Trooper Jeffrey Werda

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

LANSING, Mich. - In honor of the service and sacrifice of State Police Trooper Jeffrey Werda, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley today signed legislation designating a six-mile stretch of highway as the "Trooper Jeffrey Werda Memorial Highway."

Werda died April 6, 2011 in a single patrol car accident while responding to a call to assist Saginaw County sheriff's deputies in a pursuit.

"Trooper Werda's years with the Michigan State Police exemplified service and commitment to the safety of the people of the Great Lakes State," Calley said. "It is only fitting that we dedicate in his memory a piece of the Michigan roadways he worked so diligently to protect."

House Bill 4843, sponsored by state Rep. Joel Johnson, designates a part of M-61 near Gladwin in Werda's memory. The bill now is Public Act 71.

Article V, Section 26 of the Michigan Constitution gives authority to the lieutenant governor when the governor is outside the state.
