JANUARY 23, 2007

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today announced that visitors to city hall in the city of Wayne now have the convenience of renewing license plate tabs on a Self-Service Station.

The new Self-Service Station allows customers to scan their license plate renewal form, pay with a credit card and leave with their tabs in hand. The station is among the first to be installed outside of a Secretary of State branch office. Land first announced opening tab-renewal stations at government centers in August as part of her Customer Service Initiative.

"Customers today expect flexible access to state government services," Land said. "Now, Wayne-area residents have an additional way to renew their registration quickly, conveniently and without having to visit a branch office."

Land also thanked state Sen. Ray Basham, whose district includes the city of Wayne, for helping the department find a location for the Self-Service Station.

City Hall, located at 3355 S. Wayne Road, is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The building also is open certain evenings during city council, planning commission or other public meetings.

"I'm pleased to be able to help bring this new way to renew license plate tabs to 8th District residents," Basham said. "Fast, convenient service is what people want from state government, and the new station puts that service as close as City Hall."

Besides the Self-Service Stations now operating at more than two dozen branch offices, a station has been installed at a government center in St. Joseph County with others planned for Allen Park and Kalamazoo County. The stations have proved popular with customers, logging more than 89,000 transactions totaling more than $8.9 million since their start in April 2005.

In addition to Self-Service Stations and branch offices, customers can renew tabs by Internet, phone and mail.

Other components of Land's Customer Service Initiative include a call for more SUPER!Centers and PLUS offices, which feature expanded hours and services, as well as expanding the services available online so customers can skip the trip to a branch office entirely. Land also has heightened customer convenience by adding cash machines to 30 branch offices across the state as part of a pilot program.
