Citing her commitment to improving driver education, the Michigan Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association recognized Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today with its Distinguished Service Award.

"Land's leadership and exceptional dedication to traffic safety have improved driver education in Michigan," said David Van Dyke, an executive board member of the association and its past president. "We are proud to present this award to Secretary Land. Her commitment to driver education ultimately will help save lives on Michigan's roadways."

Land accepted the award at the association's annual conference in Mount Pleasant. At the event, driving instructors from across the state heard from Secretary of State, Michigan State Police and other officials about new laws and how to enhance their driving courses.

"I'm honored that the department's efforts to improve driver education are being applauded by those who see their effect each day," Land said. "Together we're ensuring new drivers get the skills they need to travel Michigan's roads safely."

After becoming secretary of state, Land convened an advisory committee to evaluate and recommend how to strengthen Michigan's driver education laws. The recommendations resulted in more consistent training statewide, more one-on-one instruction, better testing of the students' driving skills and greater oversight of driving instructors. The committee was made up of law enforcement officials, traffic safety leaders, driving instructors and driving school representatives, among others.
