JULY 5, 2007
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today announced that the Mobile Branch Office will be at Muskegon Bike Time to serve customers from July 20 - 22.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Sunday, July 20 - 22. The office will be in the 400 block of W. Western Avenue.
Muskegon Bike Time is a three-day motorcycle rally that features live music, stunt shows and professional bike racing. Western Avenue will be converted to a 10-block-long "Motorcycle Alley" with motorcycle vendors, food and entertainment.
The Muskegon stop is part of Land's effort to increase the number of Michigan motorcyclists who have a motorcycle endorsement.
"The Mobile Branch Office offers motorcycle enthusiasts a convenient way to get their endorsement," Land said. "Almost half of the 3,200 motorcycle crashes last year involved no other vehicle so the need to promote safe-riding skills is there. Getting your motorcycle endorsement makes good sense, and it's the law."
To get the cycle endorsement, which is noted with a "CY" on a driver's license, riders must first pass a vision and knowledge test at a branch office. Then they must demonstrate safe riding ability to a third-party tester or complete a motorcycle safety course.
The Mobile Branch Office is a full-service Secretary of State branch office and is accessible to people with disabilities. It is hauled statewide on a 24-foot trailer that has logged more than 125,000 miles since it first hit the road 10 years ago.
Land encourages all customers who have Internet access to check out the department's online services at www.Michigan.gov/sos before visiting any branch office. For example, license tabs and watercraft registrations can be renewed online. Browsing the site will help customers determine requirements before they go to an office.
