Secretary Land to visit Battle Creek, Marshall, Albion, Jackson Downtown and Jackson North branch offices

Contact:  Kelly Chesney (517) 373-2520
Agency: Secretary of State

April 1, 2003

In keeping with her commitment to visit all Secretary of State branch offices within a year, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land visited Battle Creek, Marshall, Albion, Jackson Downtown and North branch offices today to meet with employees and the public.

"These visits help me identify what is working well and what improvements are still needed in our branch offices," Secretary Land said. "As providing good customer service is one of my top priorities, the input from customers and employees is invaluable."

"All of the offices that I have visited have dedicated and talented staff, and a unique set of circumstances. Our primary challenge as a department will be maintaining core services while the state manages through difficult financial times."

During her visit, Secretary Land touched on plans to achieve improved customer service in part through advancements in technology and extended branch office hours. "Technology is rapidly transforming the way in which citizens can do business in Michigan. Moving more of Department of State’s services online is a cost effective way to deliver services that is also convenient to our customers. I am also exploring extending branch office hours through the use of employee flex time."

Last year, the Battle Creek branch office processed nearly 136,000 transactions, the Marshall branch office processed almost 106,000 transactions, the Albion branch office processed just under 50,000 transactions, the Jackson Downtown branch office processed over 150,000 transactions and the Jackson North branch office processed nearly 110,000 transactions.

Secretary Land visited the Battle Creek branch office, 1791 W. Columbia Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; the Marshall branch office, 15877 W. Michigan Ave., from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; the Albion branch office, 308 S. Superior St., from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.; the Jackson Downtown branch office, 117-19 W. Louis B Glick Highway, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.; and the Jackson North branch office, 1082 Jackson, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
