Why is the vehicle that I gave to a charity still listed in my name?

A subsequent owner has not yet titled the vehicle in his or her name. Ownership records can only be changed when the new owner submits an assigned title and processes a title application at a Secretary of State branch office. The Secretary of State cannot change the record of ownership based on your submission of a "record of sale."
The charity should provide a receipt with a description of the vehicle, including the year, make and VIN and date of donation. You can present the receipt in court as a record of sale, but because the Abandoned Vehicle law does not expressly cover donations of a vehicle to charities, it will be within the court's discretion whether to accept the receipt.
