How long does the background record check take?

Answer:

TSA estimates that most background record checks will take 30 days or less. However, the process can take up to 60 days and in rare instances longer. The FBI will notify the TSA authorized company that an individual's fingerprints could not be read. In this case, the TSA authorized company will contact the individual directly to have the fingerprints taken again. There is no fee for the second fingerprinting.
If you have not received the results of the background record check by U.S. mail after 30 days, you may call the TSA Hazmat Threat Assessment Program hot line at 1-877-429-7746 to inquiry whether your application was received or if TSA has finished processing it. You must provide identifying information such as your name, social security number, or commercial driver license number to initiate a status inquiry. Status information will not be given to others affiliated with you, such as associates, family members, spouses, or employers. Additionally, no specific information that indicates whether or not you may pose a security threat will be provided over the phone.
