How do I convert an out-of-state Commercial Driver License (CDL) to a Michigan CDL?

Answer:
Your out-of-state CDL driver's license must have the words "Commercial Driver License" or the letters "CDL" printed on the license. You must present the out-of-state driver's license along with proof of your Social Security Number, U.S. citizenship or legal presence if not a U.S. citizen and at least two documents establishing Michigan residency. You will need to pass a vision test.

Federal rules require applicants who convert an out-of-state CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement to retake the hazardous materials written test.  You must also present a Federal Security Threat Assessment before your license application can be completed.

No other CDL written tests are required unless you are upgrading the group designator, adding a new endorsement, or removing an air brake restriction.

All documentation is subject to Department of State approval.  In some cases, document approval may not occur in the same day and may require an additional visit.
