The Michigan Department of Treasury has activated a Web site dedicated to the new Michigan Business Tax (MBT). The site, located at www.michigan.gov/mbt, will be a key component of the department's continuing effort to educate Michigan's business community, tax practitioners, and others on the Michigan Business Tax, which takes effect January 1, 2008.

"This Web site will be the best source for Michigan Business Tax information," said State Treasurer Robert J. Kleine. "Given tight timelines for implementation of the MBT, this user-friendly site will be a valuable tool for Michigan businesses and the tax experts who work with them. The site also represents an important part of the department's outreach efforts."

A 30-minute Webinar, which provides an overview of the Michigan Business Tax and its provisions, is available for viewing on the MBT site under Presentations. The Webinar offers definitions and details on different elements of the MBT such as Nexus, Unitary Filing, and Apportionment. Future Webinars on various topics are planned and will also be available on the MBT Web site.

In addition to the Webinar, the new site offers a range of information and analysis, from a broad overview to a section-by-section description of Public Act 36 of 2007. Recent MBT presentations can be downloaded from the site and a schedule of upcoming presentations and events is available. Frequently Asked Questions are also posted on the site. An MBT Estimator is currently under development and will be available in the next few weeks. Businesses and tax professionals should check the Web site regularly for updates.

With the MBT taking effect in January, taxpayers and their preparers should note the following filing information and dates: Taxpayers expecting to have a 2008 tax liability exceeding $800 must file quarterly estimates. Quarterly Estimate Return forms and instructions will be mailed to businesses currently registered for the SBT in early January 2008. Forms will also be posted on the MBT site. For Calendar Year filers, MBT returns and payments will be due April 15, July 15, and October 15 of 2008 and January 15, 2009. Returns and payments for Fiscal Year Filers are due the 15th day of the first month after each quarter. Annual MBT Returns are due the last day of the 4th month after the tax year end, with payment of final liability.
